Location: Port Carling, ON
The client operated an interior decorating and high-end furniture store called Peaks and Rafters in the Town of Port Carling, Ontario. Their customers own cottages throughout the picturesque Muskoka Lakes region of Ontario. They wanted a building that reflected the traditional post and beam type of structure found in the region. Structural requirements of the project were to provide relatively large open spaces below a high cathedral ceiling and between timber columns. All steel connections between beams and columns were specially designed to be hidden within the timber connection itself. An office mezzanine was constructed within the building envelope to provide a total floor area of 3500 square feet.
This challenging project required an innovative approach to provide the practical engineering that suited the design and functionality. The effect was a stunningly open concept, depth and height matching the period's traditional timber construction and the practicality of structural integrity. The glass-windowed cupola provided skylighting and the high, large windows at either end of the building provided natural illumination complimenting the track and spot lighting. On the sides of the building, low windows afforded a vast expanse of timbered bulk that matched its rural setting.
Kleinfeldt Consultants Ltd. drew on its Engineering, Technical, Computer Assisted Drafting and Project Management expertise to complete the project in a timely and cost-effective manner.
