Kleinfeldt was retained to conduct a structural evaluation of a precast, prestressed concrete void bridge in Kitchener. The bridge is a 33m long, three span structure constructed between 1959 and 1960, with two solid end spans cantilevered over the piers and a centre span comprised of pre-cast deck unit supported by the cantilevered sections of the end spans. The deck over the end spans is reinforced concrete with an asphalt wearing surface. The deck over the pre-cast units is a concrete topping with an asphalt wearing surface. The structure has concrete sidewalks, vertical galvanized metal railing and concrete parapets between metal railing with street light poles on top.

Kleinfeldt’s examinations identified that three tension strands on each side of each plank were no longer effective and delamination was observed on the underside. Tests conforming to the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code were performed on the bridge to determine it's load capacity based on it's condition compared to that of the original construction. It was found that the bending capacity of the structure was reduced by 33%.
