Building Science is a growing area of scientific expertise that bridges the gap between architecture and engineering. It is recognized as a crucial and complex element in the effective design, construction, commissioning, operation, remediation and maintenance of buildings. The discipline focuses primarily on analysis and control of the wide range of physical phenomena that impact on building materials and building enclosure systems. These environmental conditions include the effects of weather, heat, air movement, and moisture transport as well as the characteristics of materials, physics, chemistry and biology. Building Science also considers factors such as energy consumption, environmental impact, building maintenance, sustainability, and human physiology including occupant comfort, health and safety.
The primary purpose of Building Science or Building Physics, as it is referred to in some countries, focuses on enhancing and optimizing building performance and longevity and strives to both prevent and mitigate premature building failures.

Kleinfeldt’s multidisciplinary approach utilizes state-of-the-art testing methods and investigative techniques which have proven invaluable in the detection in the early stages of building component degradation. In newer buildings, early detection of deficiencies within existing warranty provisions can provide repair strategies at minimal cost. In older buildings, where existing warranties have expired, audits can be invaluable in preventing loss of structural integrity, thereby avoiding the prohibitive costs associated with full scale replacement rather than repair. We also provide a wide range of services in data collection, structural engineering, site works, & HVAC engineering. Kleinfeldt’s expertise is built on the extensive knowledge of our building scientists who understand the complexity of new or existing building technologies and materials and we are able to assist you in all aspects of your project from assessment, re-design, remediation and repair strategies. We can also assist you in bidding, tendering, construction documentation, contract administration, on-site inspection and construction management.
